At one point or another, the beauty of plants will tempt even the most well-behaved animals. But, unfortunately, some common houseplants are toxic to our four-legged friends. So, to ease your mind (and trips to the vet), we've rounded up a list of our favourite pet-friendly plants.
1. Calatheas
Known as a Prayer Plant, these eye-catching calatheas are a perfect non-toxic plant for your furry friends and easy to look after too! We think their cool, multi-coloured leaves go well with a mid-century interior style.
2. Parlour Palms
Safe for cats and dogs, the Parlour Palm will bring a tropical feel to your home, and it also offers excellent air-purifying properties. They also only require a few hours of indirect light per day, which means you don't have to position them too close to a window, giving you a bit of styling freedom!
3. Boston Ferns
True ferns like the Boston Fern are non-toxic to pets and make excellent houseplant – especially during the winter months because they remove harmful toxins from the air and improve humidity! So go ahead and brighten up your indoors with these lush plants.
4. Echeverias
Most succulents are considered non-toxic and are harmless to pets when ingested. Echeverias are deemed pet-safe and are incredibly beautiful! They're appealing for their ease of maintenance and add a pop of colour anywhere in your home. We love including them in whimsical terrariums!
5. Spider Plants
Also known as ribbon plant or airplane plant, the spider plant is a favourite among veterinarians! Non-toxic to cats and dogs, these plants are also incredibly resilient and will tolerate a wide range of light, moisture and soil conditions. Plus, they're another terrific air-purifying option!
6. Orchids
One of the most elegant plants on our list, we're happy to report that most varieties of orchids are not poisonous! In particular, the phalaenopsis variety is safe for pets, so there's no threat to your pup or feline friend.
7. Pileas
The Pilea Peperomioide is also known as the Chinese money tree or UFO plant (a quick look at its leaves, and it's clear how it got its name)! They're easy to grow and—most importantly—non-toxic to cats and dogs.
